- Caution: Excessive backward tilt may reduce gas shielding and increase spatter.

- Consistency is key: Maintain a stable travel angle throughout welding for uniform bead formation.


Work Angle

This is the angle between the torch axis and the workpiece surface in a plane perpendicular to the welding direction.

- Fillet welds: For T-joints or lap joints, the work angle is typically 45° (bisecting the angle between the two plates). For unequal thickness plates, tilt the torch slightly toward the thicker side.

- Butt welds: In flat position butt welding, the work angle is nearly 90° (perpendicular to the workpiece).

- Adjustment purpose: The right work angle ensures even heat and molten metal distribution, preventing undercut or lack of fusion.



III. Torch Movement: Smoothness is King

Torch movement should primarily come from the entire arm (shoulder and elbow) with minor wrist adjustments.

- Avoid: Moving the torch solely with wrist bending or finger motions, which causes shaking and inconsistency.


Maintain Consistent Stick-Out (CTWD)

- Contact Tip to Work Distance (CTWD): This is the length of wire extending from the contact tip (stick-out) plus the arc length.

- How to maintain: Use a stable grip and arm movement to keep CTWD within the recommended range (typically 1/4"–1/2", ~6–13mm; refer to welding parameters). Too short a distance burns the contact tip or clogs it with spatter; too long causes arc instability, poor gas shielding, shallow penetration, and more spatter.


Travel Speed

Speed must match current, voltage, and required penetration/bead size.

- Goal: Move at a uniform speed. Too fast leads to shallow penetration, narrow/tall beads, and possible lack of fusion. Too slow causes excessive penetration, wide/sunken beads, workpiece distortion, or burn-through.

- Observe the weld pool: Adjust speed based on the pool’s width and tail shape. An ideal pool tail shows slight "ripples." Practice to develop a steady rhythm.



IV. Posture & Ergonomics: Combating Fatigue

Body Positioning

- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, maintain a stable center of gravity, and stay relaxed while keeping the weld pool in view. Avoid hunching or over-stretching.

- Keep the welding path within a comfortable front zone to prevent awkward postures.

- Self-support: As mentioned, use the non-dominant hand or arm against the workpiece (cool area) or workbench as a pivot.
